P&G Buys Supplement Maker Thorne in $3.8 Billion Deal
Procter & Gamble (P&G) has acquired Thorne, a supplement maker, for $3.8 billion. This move is part of P&G's expansion into the health and wellness business, which already includes brands such as Metamucil, Align Probiotic, and New Chapter vitamins.
P&G aims to own premium, relevant brands that younger shoppers care about. Thorne has been around for decades and has seen significant growth in recent years, with its customer base skewing young and more sales coming directly from consumers online.
The acquisition follows a pattern of big consumer companies buying trendy supplement brands. Unilever bought Grüns earlier this year. P&G's goal is to tap into the growing market for vitamins and supplements, which has been gaining popularity as people seek products to help with sleep and energy.
