Palantir and Microsoft Take Different Paths in AI

Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp is making a strong case for sovereign AI, which involves developing and managing AI systems with independence in data, technology, operations, and legal aspects.

The demand for sovereign AI has a total addressable market (TAM) between $100 billion and $160 billion, but McKinsey forecasts it will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 35% to reach approximately $600 billion by 2030.

Karp is positioning Palantir to ride this growth curve, framing it as a fork in the road that other AI vendors, including Microsoft, may have to address more directly.

Microsoft's AI business is built on renting compute and models to customers, but Karp argues that this can become a tax on businesses rather than a shortcut to competitiveness.
