Palantir's Road to Dow Inclusion Hit by Price and Competition
Palantir Technologies, the company behind the Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), has experienced significant growth since its low point in December 2022. The stock's price has increased by nearly 2700%, making it a contender for inclusion in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
The committee responsible for selecting stocks for the index, run by S&P Global, considers several factors when evaluating candidates. Palantir meets these requirements: it is part of the S&P 500 and has a U.S. headquarters based in Aventura, Florida. Additionally, most of its revenue remains domestic.
However, Palantir's inclusion in the Dow Jones Index may be hindered by its price. As a price-weighted index, the Dow favors stocks with lower prices to minimize the impact of nominal stock prices on the overall value of the index. Currently, only eight of the 30 Dow stocks have a lower price than Palantir.
Furthermore, Palantir faces competition from established companies like Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Tesla, which are part of the 'Magnificent Seven' group. These companies may pose a challenge to Palantir's inclusion in the Dow due to their larger market presence and longer track record of success.
