Perez's Own Financial Disclosures Raise Questions About Congressional Stock Trading Ban
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) has been advocating for members of Congress to be barred from trading individual stocks, but a review of her own financial disclosures raises questions about whether she fully complied with regulations.
In January 2023, Perez said in a video promoting legislation that would prohibit lawmakers from trading stocks: 'We're not here to get rich. I also think it's really important that members of Congress and their spouses are not trading individual stocks.' She has since cosponsored a bill to ban congressional stock trading.
However, a review of Perez's financial disclosure reports shows inconsistencies in her reporting of investments in Robinhood Markets, Amazon, Tesla, and Apple. In June 2022, she reported owning between $1,001 and $15,000 in Robinhood stock, but an amended report filed in February 2023 omitted this holding.
The same amended report listed Amazon and Tesla holdings valued between $1,001 and $15,000 each, which had not appeared on her original June 2022 candidate disclosure. Perez's subsequent annual financial disclosures for 2023 and 2024 did not list Amazon stock, raising questions about whether she sold the shares or continued to hold them.
