Personalized Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise in Late-Stage Trial
Moderna and Merck have announced positive results from their Phase 3 trial of a personalized cancer treatment for melanoma. The treatment combines KEYTRUDA, an existing immunotherapy drug, with a custom-made mRNA therapy designed to target each patient's unique tumor mutations. The companies analyzed the tumors after surgery and developed a personalized mRNA therapy that helps the immune system recognize and attack any remaining cancer cells.
The trial involved patients who had their melanoma removed, and those who received the treatment were less likely to have their cancer return. According to Merck and Moderna, this could eventually become available to melanoma patients after surgery to help prevent the cancer from returning. If approved by the FDA, this would be a significant breakthrough in cancer treatment.
Dr. Dean Y. Li, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said that the goal of adjuvant therapy given after surgery is to increase the possibility of cure for more patients. Stéphane Bancel, Moderna's CEO, added that this technology has the potential to address critical unmet needs in cancer treatment.
