Pest Infestations Worsen Farmers' Struggles in Udupi District
Farmers in Udupi district are facing a new challenge as severe infestations of black-headed caterpillars and red palm weevils have started affecting coconut trees in several areas. The pests, which feed on the tender shoots of coconut trees, have caused significant damage in parts of Kundapur and Byndoor, compounding the struggles farmers already face due to inadequate rainfall.
The black-headed caterpillar infestation is particularly severe in Attikone, Padukone, and other areas of Hadavu village in Byndoor taluk. A team of experts has already visited the affected regions, conducted inspections, and provided guidance to the farmers on how to manage the outbreak.
Farmers report that the red palm weevil infestation began impacting coconut saplings as early as April. The dry and hot weather that followed has worsened the situation, allowing the infestation to intensify over time. Despite continuous rainfall last year, the coconut trees were not significantly affected by pests, but this year has seen a considerable increase in infestations.
