Pharma vs Biotech: Two ETFs for Different Investing Strategies
The pharmaceutical and biotech sectors offer distinct investing opportunities, as evidenced by two popular ETFs. The iShares U.S. Pharmaceuticals ETF (IHE) provides a lower-cost entry into diversified pharmaceutical leaders with an expense ratio of 0.37%. In contrast, the Invesco Biotechnology & Genome ETF (PBE) targets high-growth biotech and genetic engineering firms.
The two funds have distinct strategic focuses, with IHE concentrating on established revenue streams from major pharmaceuticals and PBE focusing on specialized innovation. The iShares fund tracks a market-cap-weighted index of U.S. pharmaceutical companies, leading to significant concentration in its top holdings, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Eli Lilly (LLY). Invesco's biotech ETF, on the other hand, employs a quantitative methodology that evaluates U.S. companies based on price momentum, earnings growth, and management decisions.
When comparing performance and risk profiles, IHE has been the smoother and more rewarding option over the past five years, with less volatility and a better total return than PBE. However, zooming out to a decade shows that biotech comes out ahead in some periods. The choice between these two ETFs ultimately depends on an investor's time horizon and risk tolerance.
