Pixel Watch 5 Earns Top Repair Score with Simple Design

The Google Pixel Watch 5 has earned itself another top score for repairability from iFixit, a rating of 9 out of 10. This is not surprising given the watch's design philosophy that prioritizes user service and upgrade. The teardown process is straightforward, with two Torx screws releasing interior latches, allowing access to the rear sensor glass, battery, and other components.

The watch features reusable O-ring gaskets for water resistance, replacing adhesive used in previous models. This not only makes it easier to repair but also ensures that IP68 and 5 ATM certifications remain intact. Unlike many smartwatches, no heat gun is required to disassemble the Pixel Watch 5; a driver and some patience are all you need.

The most common type of repair for the watch is battery replacement, which Google has simplified by color-coding screws that guide users towards the vibration motor and ultimately the cell. The 45 mm model boasts a 465 mAh battery, slightly larger than last year's unit. iFixit has already produced guides specifically for this exchange, as well as others for screen work and back sensor glass replacement.

While screen repairs are a bit more involved, requiring the removal of several screws, a bracket, and a press connector before accessing the panel, the watch's design still allows for user maintenance without compromising water resistance. The mainboard is mounted within the chassis using a single screw and a press connector on the reverse side, with LTE variants featuring a small antenna pogo pin.
