Plug Power Tests Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Data Centers with Microsoft
Plug Power recently collaborated with Microsoft to test its backup power system using hydrogen fuel cells. The 3-megawatt prototype was delivered in two 40-foot shipping containers and successfully powered a data center during simulated outages.
The project demonstrates the technical viability of Plug's fuel cells for data centers, but CEO Jose Luis Crespo emphasized that this is not a pivot away from the company's core business. Instead, it is part of its ongoing efforts to become profitable by 2028.
Plug Power has been undergoing a massive transformation and restructuring, focusing on asset monetization rather than capital expenditures. The company aims to achieve profitability across its existing segments, including material handling, electrolyzers, and hydrogen fuel cells.
