Polymarket Growth Unfazed by JPMorgan Banking Cut Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
Polymarket's growth has put it in an unusual position as scrutiny of the industry intensifies. The prediction market giant faces challenges after JPMorgan Chase terminated its banking relationship last year due to regulatory concerns.
The banking setback comes at a time when investor interest in Polymarket has surged, with the company reportedly targeting a $20 billion-plus valuation. In April, Polymarket raised $1 billion at a $15 billion valuation, including a $600 million investment from New York Stock Exchange parent Intercontinental Exchange.
Polymarket's annualized revenue surpassed $1 billion in June, making it one of the most valuable companies in the prediction market sector. However, regulators are paying close attention to the industry, with the New York City Council Speaker opening an investigation into Polymarket and other prediction platforms over allegations of predatory and misleading marketing.
The company is also fighting a battle over whether federally regulated prediction markets can be restricted under state gambling laws. In July, a federal judge temporarily blocked Minnesota's new prediction-market ban, ruling that event contracts fall under federal CFTC jurisdiction rather than individual state gambling regimes.
