Port Authority Honors 9/11 Victims as WTC Redevelopment Continues
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, honoring its 84 employees lost in the tragedy, including 34 police officers. Executive Director Kathryn Garcia said the sound of water at the memorial's reflecting pools remains a grounding reminder of the lives lost.
The agency has spent decades rebuilding the World Trade Center campus, transforming the 16-acre site into a thriving commercial and transportation hub. The redevelopment includes over 12 million square feet of office and cultural space, expanded public greenery, and the Oculus transit hub.
Garcia noted that despite concerns about the future of office work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Port Authority remained committed to Lower Manhattan's growth and success. American Express is relocating its global headquarters to Two World Trade Center, a 55-story building set to open in 2031, which will bring approximately 10,000 workers to the site.
