Portland Community Rallies Behind Day Laborers After Being Pushed Out of Home Depot Parking Lot
A rally in Portland drew over 100 community members and three elected officials to support day laborers who have been forced off a Home Depot parking lot by property management.
The workers had gathered at the location for years, but were recently pushed out due to new policies that claim people should not congregate on the property.
Speakers at the rally emphasized the importance of protecting day laborers and condemned the actions of ICE. 'No worker should ever have to choose between putting food on the table and staying safe from harm,' said District 3 City Councillor Tiffany Koyama Lane, who is running for re-election.
The workers are demanding that Mall 205 meet directly with them and Voz to establish a safe hiring area, and allow them to return without retaliation. A digital petition has been created to support their demands, which can be found online.
