Prysmian and Rio Tinto Supply Low-Carbon Aluminium Cables for Amazon Data Center
Italian cable maker Prysmian has partnered with Rio Tinto to supply low-carbon aluminium electrical cables for an Amazon data center in Ohio. The cables will be made using ELYSIS 'inert-anode' technology, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by releasing pure oxygen instead of the usual process.
The project marks the first use of inert-anode-smelted aluminum in a data center and demonstrates a reduction in the carbon footprint of data centers at the raw material level. Prysmian will manufacture the cables at its Missouri facility, as part of an ongoing collaboration announced by both companies in March 2026.
Amazon's Vice President of Data Center Engineering, Joern Tinnemeyer, highlighted the initiative's connection to the company's net zero target by 2040. The use of low-carbon aluminum is seen as a step towards reducing the environmental impact of data centers and meeting this goal.
