Pune Company Loses Rs 30 Lakh in Microsoft Teams Cyber Heist
A Pune-based engineering company has lost Rs 30 lakh to a cyber fraudster who impersonated one of its directors on Microsoft Teams, a workplace communication platform.
The incident took place at the company's premises in Bhosari's Balajinagar. The fraudster created a fake profile with the name and appearance of the director and sent instructions to transfer the money to a bank account.
According to police, the case is significant as it highlights how cyber fraudsters can use familiar corporate communication environments to make employees less suspicious.
The company realised the instruction had not come from its director after the transfer was made, and approached the police. A probe has been launched to identify the person behind the impersonation and trace the money.
