Q2 Earnings Show Cautious Consumers Prioritizing Needs-Based Categories
The second-quarter earnings reports from Home Depot, Lowe's, and Tractor Supply have revealed a cautious consumer who is prioritizing needs-based categories over discretionary purchases. Despite positive comparable sales for both Home Depot and Lowe's, Tractor Supply's comps declined.
Home Depot reported $47.9 billion in second-quarter sales, up 5.7% from the prior year, with comparable sales increasing 1.7%. The company attributed this growth to smaller projects and repair, maintenance, and recurring needs, which remain resilient despite consumer uncertainty and housing affordability concerns.
Lowe's results reinforced the importance of professional customers, with strength in pro-heavy categories and a 15.7% increase in online sales. The company is expanding beyond its traditional big-box footprint through acquisitions and investments in job-lot quantities, delivery, sales teams, and specialized services.
