Qantas Incident: Serious Runway Conflict at Sydney Airport

A serious incident involving two Qantas aircraft and air traffic control at Sydney Airport has been reported by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

The incident occurred on July 27 when a Boeing 737, operating as Qantas flight QFA124 from Queenstown to Sydney, was cleared to cross runway 34L while a DHC-8, operating as QantasLink flight QLK424D from Canberra to Sydney, was still in its landing roll on the same runway.

Air traffic control quickly detected the conflict and alerted both flight crews, with the Boeing 737 stopping after reaching the runway's holding point.

The ATSB has classified the incident as a 'serious' occurrence involving a runway incursion, breakdown of coordination, and procedural error. No injuries were reported.
