AWS and JPMorgan Chase have teamed up to tackle complex financial problems using quantum computing. The multi-year research partnership focuses on portfolio optimization, risk analysis, and mathematical heavy-lifting that classical computers struggle with.

The collaboration uses Amazon Braket, AWS's managed quantum computing service, which allows researchers to experiment with different quantum hardware without building their own machines.

JPMorgan has been exploring quantum computing since 2020, establishing an internal research team. The bank is also concerned about the potential vulnerabilities of cryptocurrencies due to quantum advancements, and is developing post-quantum cryptography to fortify defenses.

AWS and JPMorgan have made significant progress in their partnership, with a joint study published in Physical Review Research in May 2024 examining quantum speedups for maximum independent set problems. They have also reported scaling hybrid quantum experiments to hundreds of qubits using Rydberg atom hardware at AWS re:Invent 2025.
