Commercial quantum computing has become a multi-billion-dollar industry dominated by cloud-hosted utility models. Unlike classical computers, which can be purchased and installed in data centers, modern high-performance quantum computers require specialized facilities and equipment.
As a result, companies do not buy quantum hardware; they purchase access to it via cloud platforms like Amazon Braket, Microsoft Azure Quantum, and Google Cloud Quantum Engine. These platforms charge users per-task pricing or dedicated hardware time reservations, with prices ranging from 30 cents per task to thousands of dollars per hour.
Nations are also creating sovereign quantum data centers to ensure their national defense and academic computations remain within domestic networks. This shift is driven by concerns over foreign intelligence interception and future technology embargoes.
