Top AI Companies Explore Industry Standards Body Amid Safety Concerns
Top AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, have been discussing the creation of an industry standards body to regulate the development and testing of advanced AI models.
The discussions were sparked by a July essay written by Demis Hassabis, founder of Google DeepMind, who proposed a US-led Standards Body modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
Hassabis argued that the standards body should test AI models before deployment and be a public-private partnership overseen by the government but funded by the industry and staffed by independent technical experts and open-source representatives.
However, not all tech leaders are on board with the idea. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly advised President Donald Trump against it in a phone call this summer.
