Quantum Computing Shifts from Qubit Quantity to Logical Reliability
Quantum computing has reached a significant milestone as researchers shift their focus from raw qubit counts to reliable logical qubits, error correction, and useful circuits. The field has become increasingly competitive with various approaches advancing simultaneously.
The latest breakthroughs in quantum computing have been achieved by IBM, Google, Microsoft, Quantinuum, IonQ, and QuEra. IBM's Nighthawk r2 system has 120 programmable qubits, while its experiment with 70 logical qubits demonstrated a task that is beyond practical classical simulation.
Google is focusing on verifiable quantum advantage through algorithms designed around useful, scientifically meaningful computational tasks. Its Quantum Echoes research targets the first verifiable quantum advantage for a real-world-oriented algorithmic task.
The US government has also raised its focus on quantum technology with the creation of the QC-ADDS effort and the Quantum Genesis program. The programs aim to develop fault-tolerant systems, domestic manufacturing, and useful scientific results.
