Quantum Computing Stocks on the Rise: A Basket Approach for Investors
Quantum computing has the potential to be the next big technological breakthrough after artificial intelligence. Companies in the field are pursuing the technology in various ways, so a basket approach may be the best investment option.
IonQ and Quantinuum are leading the charge on accuracy using the trapped-ion technique. IonQ achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity and demonstrated real-time quantum error correction decoding. It also made several acquisitions across different areas of the quantum ecosystem.
Quantinuum, another top quantum stock in terms of accuracy, recorded 99.92% 2-qubit gate fidelity. Its new Sol system is expected to hit 99.999% logical fidelity by 2027. The company has developed an open-source quantum computing language called Guppy and a universal quantum code translator.
D-Wave and IBM are two top companies using the faster superconducting qubit technology. D-Wave plans to use fluxonium qubits, which show characteristics comparable to its annealing technology. Infleqtion's neutral-atom approach could become the best of both worlds, achieving accuracy levels comparable to trapped ions while increasing speed.
IBM is investing heavily in quantum computing and has a long-term future tied to the technology. The company plans to invest more than $10 billion in quantum technology over the next five years and aims to introduce the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
