RADIANCE Translates Fire Into Light at Walt Disney Concert Hall
The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles hosted a unique light sculpture installation called RADIANCE during three consecutive performances of Alexander Scriabin's Prometheus: The Poem of Fire. Conceived to accompany the music, the work translates fire into light and takes the form of a pulsing spark suspended above the orchestra.
The installation was created by Peruvian-born American artist Grimanesa Amorós, who has worked with light as both material and language since 2002. RADIANCE measures 60 × 35 × 5 feet and is constructed from reflective material, color-shifting rope-like LED tubing, and custom electrical hardware.
The lighting sequence for the installation was written specifically for the work and controls its changing illumination. Amorós programmed both the sculpture's lighting system and the existing house lighting at Walt Disney Concert Hall as a single environment, connecting the suspended sculpture with the architecture and performance.
