RECARO's Next-Gen R4 Seat Earns ETSO Certification on Boeing 787
RECARO Aircraft Seating has secured European Technical Standard Order (ETSO) certification for its next-generation R4 premium class seat on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The R4 represents a significant upgrade to RECARO's widely deployed PL3530 platform, which first entered commercial airline service in 2015.
The new R4 seat features 16-inch entertainment monitors, dedicated privacy wings, and initial deliveries commenced in June 2026. According to the certification profile, the R4 integrates lightweight carbon-composite structures with advanced personal privacy modules, answering airlines' demands for premium products that bridge the comfort gap between standard economy and lie-flat business suites.
The seat provides an extra-wide single-piece tray table featuring a soft-dampened opening and closing mechanism to prevent sudden drops. The R4 also includes dedicated mechanical holders for securing smartphones and tablets at an optimal viewing angle, while integrated USB-C high-wattage power ports keep personal electronics charged throughout the flight.
