Data centers are increasingly relying on AI to power their operations, but this comes at an environmental cost. The massive amounts of energy required to support AI-powered data centers contribute to e-waste and higher electricity bills for local residents.

To combat this issue, researchers from the University of California San Diego have been repurposing old Google Pixel phones to create low-cost, low-carbon clusters that can power small-scale data centers. The study aims to reduce the carbon footprint created by discarded devices, which account for around 50% of embodied carbon.

The team collected over 2,000 discarded Pixel phones and used their motherboards to create a cluster of 20 devices that can supply enough power to support a classroom of more than 75 students. The results show promise, with the potential to power 100 classes simultaneously using 2,000 phones.

While this initiative is a step in the right direction, it's clear that there's still much work to be done to combat e-waste on a larger scale. As people continue to upgrade their devices every four years, the problem persists, and responsible disposal practices are crucial to minimizing harm.
