Retailers Open but Banks Closed on Labor Day
Labor Day 2026 is here, and most major retailers and grocery stores are open for business. However, some key services have pulled down their shutters due to the federal holiday.
Banks are closed today, along with post offices and Costco. The stock market will not resume trading until Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 9:30 a.m. ET. Mail delivery has also been suspended as part of the official postal service's observance of Labor Day.
On the other hand, most major retailers and grocery chains are operating during their regular business hours. Walmart, Target, CVS Pharmacy locations, Food Lion, Kroger, Stop and Shop, Trader Joe’s, and Wegmans are all open today. Some departments at Wegmans may have limited hours, and Stop and Shop pharmacies are closed.
Aldi is also open with limited hours, but local store hours can be checked online. In addition to retailers, Home Depot, Lowe's, Macy's, Kohl's, JCPenney, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, IKEA, Nordstrom, Petco, Dollar General, and Michaels are all expected to be open today.
Major fast-food chains including McDonald’s, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Burger King, Domino’s, and IHOP are also open. However, it is worth checking individual locations for any adjusted hours.
