Retro Drinks: A Look Back at the Canned Sodas of the 1970s

Some canned drinks from the 1970s still exist today, while others have gone out of production. One such drink is Aspen, a soda that was released in 1978 with a sophisticated apple flavor and elegant marketing campaign.

However, despite its attempts to stand out, Aspen lost its appeal soon after its release and was discontinued in 1982.

Another popular canned drink of the time was Tab, which was Coca-Cola's first diet soda when it was launched in 1963. However, Tab faced challenges due to the use of cyclamate as an artificial sweetener, which was banned in the US in 1970. The company later switched to saccharin, but this too had health concerns.

Other drinks like Mr. Pibb and Pepsi Light also gained popularity during the 1970s before eventually being discontinued. Rondo, a citrus-flavored soda released in 1978, was another short-lived drink that failed to compete with other options in the market.
