Rocket Lab's Iridium Acquisition: A Spectrum Play or a Strategic Gamble?
Rocket Lab's proposed acquisition of Iridium Communications is not just about expanding its satellite constellation, but also gaining access to valuable spectrum assets. According to Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck, Iridium's L-band spectrum is a key prize in the deal, with potential applications in defense communications and as an alternative to GPS.
Beck estimates that Rocket Lab could have deployed Iridium's constellation for around $350 million, significantly lower than the estimated $3 billion cost. He also suggests that deploying such a project would take 12-24 months, compared to over five years for Iridium.
The deal would give Rocket Lab control of Iridium's spectrum assets, which are already attracting attention from other players in the industry, including SpaceX and Amazon. Beck points out that these companies have invested heavily in acquiring spectrum licenses, demonstrating its importance in the industry.
