Rubenstein Reflects on Sports Ownership and Investing Mistakes
Billionaire David Rubenstein shared his insights on sports ownership, investing mistakes, and AI stocks in an interview ahead of his new book 'Inside the Owner's Box.'
Rubenstein bought the Baltimore Orioles for approximately $1.7 billion in 2024, stating he wanted to contribute to his hometown of Baltimore through philanthropy.
The Carlyle Group cofounder also revealed that starting the private equity firm with limited funds was likely his best investment, while walking away from Facebook and Amazon at their inception was his gravest mistake.
Rubenstein recalled being offered a stake in Amazon by founder Jeff Bezos but selling it during the dot-com bubble, missing out on billions of dollars in value. He also turned down an opportunity to invest in Facebook when Mark Zuckerberg sought funding from him and his son-in-law.
Regarding AI stocks, Rubenstein acknowledged that valuations are high, but pointed to Nvidia's recent success as evidence that some companies will continue to thrive. However, he warned about the risks of aggressive accounting, hidden debt, and overinvestment in AI, saying 'when the tide goes out, we'll see who's been swimming without a bathing suit.'
