Russia Breathes New Life into Iconic Antonov An-2 Biplane

The Antonov An-2MS-X project is reviving Russia's iconic biplane, which has been in service for decades. The modernized aircraft will feature a fully integrated glass cockpit, updated flight management and control systems, and additional fuel tanks to extend its operating range.

After years of regulatory hurdles, the Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute (SibNIA) was officially recognized as the developer responsible for the An-2MS-X. This milestone is expected to bring the aircraft much closer to modern aviation standards while preserving its rugged characteristics.

The engine remains a challenge facing the An-2MS-X program, with many calling for a Russian replacement for the imported Honeywell TPE331-12UAN turboprop. The development of the VK-1600S turboprop is seen as a promising long-term solution, but it is still under development and has yet to be certified.

The An-2MS-X will not replace the LMS-901 Baikal, which is expected to become Russia's next-generation light utility aircraft. Instead, both aircraft are likely to coexist for years, serving distinct segments of the market in remote regions of Russia.
