Russia Unveils High-Powered VK-1600S Turboprop Engine for Baikal Aircraft
Rostec has announced that ODC has completed the design documentation for the VK-1600S turboprop engine, which will power the light aircraft TVS-2DTS, also known as the 'Baikal'. The engine produces a massive 1450 horsepower and aims to solve the problem of developing modern engines for Russian small aviation.
One of the issues with the TVS-2DTS was finding a suitable engine, but now that has been resolved. Dmitry Baranov, a leading expert at Finam Management, notes that the TVS-2DTS can completely solve the problem of accessibility to remote regions due to its capabilities.
The TVS-2DTS is already certified and operates as a workhorse in Eastern Siberia and the Far East. The prototype was originally built on an American Honeywell TPE331-12UAN engine and foreign avionics, but it never entered production in its original form.
