S&P 500 Hits Record High as Nuclear Stocks Surge
The S&P 500 hit a fresh all-time high on October 6, climbing 0.85% to 7,840 by midday. The Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average also saw gains, rising 0.88% to 27,718 and 0.69% to 51,622, respectively. Falling oil prices helped ease inflation concerns, contributing to the positive market sentiment.
Nuclear stocks surged after Constellation Energy Corporation announced a deal with Alphabet's Google. Vistra and Talen Energy were among the beneficiaries of this sector-wide boost. Meanwhile, Marvell Technology jumped over 7% after its investor day revenue plans impressed analysts. Dell Technologies also rose as it expanded its AI platform to improve performance, and CrowdStrike climbed 3.78% on bullish analyst sentiment.
Healthcare was the only sector to fall, while real estate and industrial stocks showed notable strength. Gold prices increased by 0.64% to $44,166.19, and the 10-Year Treasury yield fell 5 basis points to 5.27%. The S&P 500's new highs were driven by easing inflation concerns and renewed enthusiasm for AI stocks.
Memory stocks slipped, with Sandisk, Seagate Technology, and Western Digital all trading in the red. Reports that Toshiba plans to capture a larger share of the memory market did not significantly impact overall chip demand and shortages.
