S&P 500 Now 21% Nvidia Apple Microsoft as Tech Dominance Grows
The S&P 500 has reached a record level of concentration, with Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft now accounting for more than 21% of the index. This marks the highest combined weight of any three companies in the S&P 500's history, surpassing the 13.4% share held by IBM, AT&T, and ExxonMobil in the mid-1980s.
Recent stock performance has driven this concentration. Nvidia's stock has soared, partly due to a $150 billion stock buyback plan, the largest in history, which has boosted its weight in the index. Apple's stock has also climbed near record highs following its recent product event, which introduced the iPhone Duo and other innovations. Microsoft's stock has risen as well, supported by strong analyst expectations for its Azure cloud business.
The result is an S&P 500 heavily influenced by just three mega-cap technology companies. Movements in these stocks can now have a significant impact on the broader US stock market, highlighting the growing dominance of AI and tech-related firms.
