S&P 500 Stocks Hit New Highs Amid Valuation Concerns
On Tuesday, August 4, an impressive 36 stocks in the S&P 500 index hit their highest prices over the past year. Among them were financial giants and tech leaders, raising questions about valuation and business quality.
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B), with a market value of around $1.115 trillion, was one of the largest names to reach a new high. This mix of strong performers includes Diversified Banks and Transaction & Payment Processing Services.
Visa (V) stands out for trading at 30.8 times trailing earnings, despite revenue growth of 14.4% over the past year and an operating margin of 65.6%. In contrast, Dell Technologies (DELL) trades at a high multiple of 36.1 times trailing earnings, supported by revenue growth of 38.6%, but with an operating margin of only 8.1%.
A 52-week high is not necessarily a guarantee of continued success. The key lies in the underlying business, and whether it can support its current valuation through current earnings or future growth prospects.
