SaaS Industry Stumbles as AI-Powered Solutions Gain Traction
The SaaS industry is facing a crisis as customer demand shifts towards AI-powered solutions. According to recent quarterly earnings reports, major global SaaS companies like Salesforce and Workday have seen their shares fall by over 30% in the past year.
IBM's market value dropped by $69 billion in a single day in July due to its warning on net profit outlook as customer spending shifted from software to AI hardware. HubSpot's shares fell 19% after its earnings release, marking its worst drop in 10 years, while Datadog also fell 19% on August 7.
Even listed SaaS companies are struggling with valuation issues. Italian company Bending Spoons acquired Airtable for $1.28 billion in cash, but Airtable's valuation had fallen sharply from its peak of over $11 billion during the 2021 boom.
