Sabbatini Leads, Clarke Celebrates Birthday with Strong Performance

Northern Irish golfer Darren Clarke celebrated his 58th birthday in style at the Boeing Classic, carding a solid first-round score of four-under-par to place himself in contention for the title. The veteran pro made light work of the front nine, collecting three birdies and only one bogey on his way to the turn. His back-nine play was equally impressive, with another birdie at the 18th hole securing him a spot near the top of the leaderboard.

Clarke's playing partner, fellow Northern Irishman Chris Devlin, did not fare as well, carding a disappointing two-over-par round to place himself in a tie for 48th. Despite his struggles, Devlin has shown he is capable on the PGA TOUR Champions circuit, having finished tied 17th at the U.S. Senior Open earlier this year.

The current leader of the tournament is Slovakia's Rory Sabbatini, who fired a bogey-free seven-under-par round to take a two-stroke lead. Sabbatini has been in fine form recently, with top-10 finishes at both the Kaulig Companies Championship and the American Family Insurance Championship.

Two players are tied for second place: Jerry Kelly and Steven Alker, who carded five-under-par rounds to put themselves within striking distance of Sabbatini. Kelly seeks his second win at the Boeing Classic in his eighth start on the PGA TOUR Champions circuit, while Alker looks to add a 12th victory to his impressive resume.
