Salesforce Acquires Contentful for Estimated $1-1.5 Billion
The acquisition of Contentful by Salesforce has sent shockwaves through the headless CMS market. The deal, which was announced yesterday and closed on September 1, 2026, puts Contentful's API-first architecture under the umbrella of Agentforce, a suite of tools for orchestrating personalized experiences across channels.
The price tag is estimated to be between $1 billion and $1.5 billion, according to The Information, which reported it first. This acquisition comes on the heels of Sanity's recent $85 million Series C funding round in May 2025, and Strapi's continued independence as an open-source platform.
Pricing is a key area where these three platforms diverge. Contentful's entry-level plan starts at $300/month for up to 1M API calls and 20 users, while Sanity offers a free tier with 20 seats and 2 public datasets. Strapi also has a free tier for personal/non-commercial use.
The acquisition of Contentful by Salesforce raises questions about the future direction of the platform's development roadmap, pricing tiers, and API stability. Will existing customers see price hikes as their contracts are transitioned to Agentforce? Will developer experience take a backseat to ecosystem lock-in?
