Salesforce CEO Defies 'SaaSpocalypse' Fears Amid Strong Earnings
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has once again pushed back against warnings of an impending 'SaaSpocalypse', where AI agents supposedly undermine the software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model. Instead, he argues that commoditized AI models will increase the importance of enterprise applications and customer relationship management (CRM).
Benioff made his case on Salesforce's second-quarter earnings call, citing growth in software seats, customer retention, contract lengths, and AI usage as evidence that fears over AI agents destroying traditional SaaS have yet to materialize. He pointed out that annual recurring revenue for the Agentforce agentic AI platform reached $1.5 billion, while customers generated 3.2 billion agentic workspace units during the quarter, up 97 percent from the previous quarter.
The CEO also noted that enterprises will increasingly consume AI through packaged software applications rather than managing foundation models themselves. He compared this to other infrastructure businesses typically do not interact with directly, such as chips or data centers. 'You are using Slack, you are consuming AI through packaged software,' Benioff said.
Agricultural technology company Ohalo's CEO David Friedberg shared a customer experience that reinforced Salesforce's argument. He explained how his company experimented with building its own CRM using AI coding tools before ultimately choosing Salesforce due to the complexity and effort required for maintenance, accounts, and security.
