Salesforce's Benioff: Enterprise AI Moving from Hype to Execution
Salesforce Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff spoke at The Six Five Summit about the current state of enterprise artificial intelligence (AI). According to Benioff, AI is moving from hype to execution, but slowly. Many large companies are only just beginning their AI work while still investing in old systems.
Benioff described a three-phase progression for enterprise AI: 1) prompt-based models using public data, 2) agentic systems that can carry out tasks on their own, and 3) dynamic user interfaces that merge deterministic enterprise software with probabilistic AI systems. He said the third phase is where real enterprise value begins to show up.
Salesforce is already building toward this model through a 'fully headless system,' with applications built in Lightning and rendered through new APIs. The company is also using external AI platforms such as Claude. Benioff highlighted several operational updates, including Casey, which has resolved 5 million customer service issues, and Slackbot, which helps tens of millions of Slack users.
Benioff emphasized that companies should not think of AI as a reason to discard existing systems. Instead, AI should help unlock the value trapped in long-standing technology investments while preserving security, governance, and control. He described this approach as 'the happy middle.'
