San Miguel de Allende Sees Changes with Home Depot Expansion and Highway Safety Concerns

San Miguel de Allende is witnessing significant changes in its infrastructure and business landscape. Home Depot, the US-based home improvement chain, has begun construction on a new store behind MAC Hospital. The $21 million investment in San Miguel is part of the company's larger plan to open stores in León and Guanajuato, with a total investment of $1.3 billion by 2030.

Home Depot already employs over 18,000 people at its 140 stores across Mexico, serving more than 100 cities. The new store in San Miguel will join several existing hardware and home supply stores, including Grupo Ferretero Don Pedro outlets. To comply with local requirements, Home Depot modified the design of its San Miguel store.

Meanwhile, residents along Highway 51 have been petitioning for improvements to prevent accidents and fatalities. At least five deaths have occurred on this stretch of road in recent times, prompting area residents to request a traffic light, pedestrian crossing, and comprehensive safety measures from the State Public Works Department.

The family-run Café de la Parroquia has closed its doors after 37 years of operation. Founded in 1989, the café was known for serving good food at reasonable prices and was a staple within walking distance of the main square. The owners will reportedly sell the building that housed the cafe.
