Scammers Target Students With AI-Generated Deception
As students head back to school this fall, they become prime targets for scammers.
A recent report from the FBI's Internet Crime Report found that Americans ages 20-29 reported over $500 million in internet-crime losses in 2025.
The most common scams targeting students include online shopping and marketplace scams, fake job offers requiring upfront payment, and rental scams built around fake apartment listings.
According to a guide sponsored by JPMorgan Chase, scammers are using AI-generated voice cloning and deepfakes to impersonate family members, banks, and employers.
To protect themselves, students should use credit cards over peer-to-peer payments, verify suspicious calls independently, and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true.
