Schwab Retail Trading Gauge Falls Amid Software Profit-Taking
The Charles Schwab Trading Activity Index (STAX) declined to 57.50 in August, marking its first drop since April despite a 2.96% gain in the S&P 500. This decline was attributed to profit-taking and rebalancing by Schwab's retail clients after sharp rebounds in software stocks.
The top bought stocks among Schwab's clients included SpaceX (SPCX), Nvidia (NVDA), Micron Technology (MU), Intel (INTC), and Alphabet (GOOGL). On the other hand, Palantir Technologies (PLTR), Microsoft (MSFT), ServiceNow (NOW), Salesforce (CRM), and Oracle (ORCL) were among the top sold stocks.
According to Schwab's head trading and derivatives strategist, Joe Mazzola, 'August trading activity suggests Schwab's retail clients were becoming more selective as markets recovered.' Mazzola added that many clients were rebalancing their portfolios, taking profits in high-beta software stocks after sharp rebounds while remaining engaged with growth and innovation leaders such as SpaceX and Nvidia.
