Semiconductor Stocks Shine Amid US Market Decline
The US stock market saw a significant downturn on Tuesday (the 8th) following the Labor Day holiday, with all three major indexes closing lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by 628 points, or 1.18%, to settle at 52,786.
Rising oil prices and renewed inflation concerns weighed heavily on market sentiment, contributing to the decline. However, semiconductor stocks bucked this trend, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rising by 1.3% and nearing the 12,000 threshold.
The index's strong performance was led by Intel, which surged 9.05%, followed closely by AMD, which gained 5.90%. This outperformance can be attributed to supportive commentary from senior leadership at AMD, who projected that the addressable market for artificial intelligence could reach $2 trillion to $3 trillion by 2030.
Qualcomm also rose significantly after signing a long-term partnership agreement with Amazon to co-develop custom chips and optical interconnect technology for AI data centers. This deal further fueled investor enthusiasm for semiconductor stocks, particularly those with exposure to the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market.
