Senator Kelly Pushes AI Companies to Fund Workforce Solutions
Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) has called on artificial intelligence companies to contribute more toward addressing the workforce challenges created by the rapid adoption of AI. In a post on X, Kelly argued that firms benefiting the most from AI should help solve the economic impact of the technology. His Make AI Work for Americans Act aims to invest in job training, apprenticeships, and small businesses to support Americans in a changing economy.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has emphasized the need to accept some AI risks for its benefits, advocating for broader access and lighter regulation. He warned against catastrophic risks and the dangers of replacing human judgment with AI. Chamath Palihapitiya supported Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s warning that companies using closed AI models might pay fees while exposing proprietary knowledge, noting that cheaper open-weight models are closing the gap with leading closed systems.
Concerns about AI and jobs have been debated, with Kevin O’Leary pushing back against the idea that AI eliminates jobs. He claimed AI has helped over 50 of his companies cut costs and improve productivity, arguing that AI creates better opportunities. Hilton Hotels received nearly 15,000 applications for its 2027 early-career program, with AI helping candidates tailor resumes, though recruiters faced higher application volumes. Cisco President Jeetu Patel predicted AI will create more jobs than it eliminates over the next five years, highlighting the need for different skills in the future.
