September Updates Break File History Backups for Windows Users
Microsoft's recent September updates have been found to break File History backups on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The bug causes local and network backups to fail silently, leading users to believe their files are still protected when they're not.
Affected systems can log application crashes referencing FileHistory.exe and KERNELBASE.dll in Event Viewer, making it difficult for users to identify the issue. Users may see repeated 'Reconnect your drive' prompts even if an external USB drive or network-attached storage location is connected and working normally.
The bug affects Windows 11 versions 23H2 through 26H1 and Windows 10 22H2, 21H2, and Enterprise LTSC 2016 and 2019. Microsoft says it is developing a fix for a future release but has not given a timeline or offered an official workaround.
