Sequoia Leads $1 Billion Round for Valar Atomics Amid Nuclear Startup Boom
Valar Atomics has secured a $1 billion Series B funding round led by Sequoia Capital, catapulting its valuation to $6 billion. This is three times its previous valuation of $2 billion from just months ago.
The startup plans to use the funds to shift from demonstration to factory production of its small modular reactors (SMRs). These units can power data centers, industrial sites, and military installations without drawing from the grid.
Valar achieved a significant milestone in July when it used a nuclear fission reaction to produce enough electricity to power an Nvidia AI chip. This feat is one of four self-sustaining nuclear chain reactions started by companies this year.
The company, along with Nvidia, is planning a 30-megawatt nuclear-powered AI facility in Utah. This would be the first commercial application of their partnership and address concerns over water use in data centers.
