Sherwin-Williams Expands North Carolina Manufacturing Plant with Rail and Automation Upgrades
Sherwin-Williams has officially opened its expanded manufacturing plant in Statesville, North Carolina, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 30. The project added nearly 50,000 square feet of new space, featuring enhanced production capacity, automation upgrades, and four new rail spurs to improve logistics. The facility, which is the company’s largest in North America, now boasts improved material handling and streamlined operations.
The expansion was driven by factors like transportation access, a skilled local workforce, and the site’s strategic role in Sherwin-Williams’ manufacturing and distribution network. The project also involved a public-private partnership, with incentives approved by North Carolina, Iredell County, and the City of Statesville. The upgrades aim to strengthen the company’s manufacturing, distribution, and logistics capabilities.
The plant opening comes amid a challenging environment for manufacturing construction starts, which fell 77.2% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026. Chief Economist Michael Guckes of ConstructConnect attributed this decline to uncertainty around industrial policy and high interest rates. Despite this broader trend, Sherwin-Williams’ investment reflects confidence in long-term growth and operational efficiency.
Sherwin-Williams has operated in Statesville since 1993, making this expansion a continuation of its commitment to the region. The facility’s new automation and rail infrastructure are expected to enhance flexibility and productivity, positioning the company for future demands in the architectural paint and coatings industry.
