Sherwin-Williams Faces $125K Fine for Air Pollution Violations

Sherwin-Williams will pay a civil penalty of almost $125,000 for violating the Air Pollution Control Act at its plant in Rochester, Beaver County. The company has entered into a consent order with the Department of Environmental Protection after residents complained about chemical odors both outside and inside their homes.

The DEP found that Sherwin-Williams failed to install a thermal oxidizer, an air pollution control device designed to eliminate harmful volatile organic compounds. This was discovered in January, when the DEP announced its findings.

A company spokesperson stated that the thermal oxidizer is expected to be installed by the end of October. If Sherwin-Williams fails to meet deadlines to resolve several other issues, it will face additional fines of $1,000 per day per violation.
