Shopify Merchants Face Control vs Friction Trade-off in Google's Native AI Checkout

Google has expanded its native AI checkout for eligible Shopify merchants, allowing them to sell through Google's AI experiences without leaving their own interface.

This move reduces purchase friction while creating questions about attribution, analytics, and control of the checkout experience.

The native checkout allows merchants to place a checkout button on product listings in AI Mode and Gemini, with Google Pay handling payment and shipping details inside the flow.

Merchants remain the seller of record, but part of the customer journey leaves their own interface, where teams normally control merchandising, cross-sells, experimentation, analytics, and the visual experience around checkout.
