Shoppes of Wilton Manors Redevelopment Plan Approved Despite Resident Concerns
The Shoppes of Wilton Manors, also known as Alibi Plaza, is set for a major redevelopment after the city commission approved a new plan. The project will introduce a mix of commercial and residential spaces, with businesses lining Wilton Drive and 89 housing units located further back. The existing building, home to establishments like Alibi and Hunters, will also receive exterior upgrades to match the aesthetic of the new development.
The vacant building on the lot has remained empty for years, as previous redevelopment plans fell through. The WilMa On the Drive project, for example, stalled and collapsed, leading to the relocation or closure of several businesses, including Pride Factory and Sherwin-Williams.
The current plan has faced opposition from residents, particularly over setback adjustments that allow parts of the project to be closer to neighboring properties. While residents successfully pushed back a few feet, they still express feelings of betrayal. Additional concerns include increased traffic through the neighborhood, with residents advocating for a physical barrier to prevent drivers from cutting through the residential area.
There is no confirmed timeline for demolition or construction, but the commercial properties facing Wilton Drive are expected to be the first structures built. The project aims to revitalize the area while addressing the concerns of the local community.
