Singapore Stocks Soar on 'Goldilocks' Economic Backdrop

Singapore's stock market has been on a tear, outperforming global markets over the past month due to its unique blend of growth and stability. The Straits Times Index (STI) has surged 23% this year, hitting a series of record highs, with some analysts predicting further gains.

Robust economic growth, driven by tech exports and productivity gains, has boosted corporate earnings, leading JPMorgan Chase & Co to describe the economic backdrop as 'Goldilocks'. The nation's three largest banks - DBS Group Holdings, OCBC Bank, and United Overseas Bank - have been major contributors to the rally, with investors drawn to their exposure to Singapore's thriving wealth management industry.

The banks' earnings reports have exceeded analyst forecasts, with OCBC Bank being the standout performer, with shares climbing 61% this year. The positive long-term outlook for the Singapore dollar has also added to the appeal of Singaporean stocks, with investors gravitating towards haven assets amid global geopolitical turmoil.

JPMorgan raised its forecast for the STI to 6,500, implying a gain of about 13% from the current level. However, not all analysts are bullish, with Fidelity International warning that valuations have become stretched and the index is the most expensive within Asean.
